When booking a makeup artist, one of the first questions you will be asked is: 'Do you prefer a dewy or matte finish?' If you are not sure what these terms mean or which one suits you, here is a simple guide to help you decide:
The Dewy Finish
Dewy makeup focuses on looking fresh, youthful, and moist. It mimics the natural oils of healthy skin, reflecting light to create a radiant 'lit-from-within' glow. It uses liquid and cream formulations with light-reflecting particles.
- Best for: Dry, normal, or mature skin. Dewy finishes add hydration and youthfulness to dry or aging skin.
- Avoid if: You have very oily skin or active acne, as dewy makeup can make oily skin look shiny or highlight skin texture.
The Matte Finish
Matte makeup is completely shine-free, velvet-smooth, and provides a sophisticated, airbrushed look. It focuses on absorbing excess oil and creating a uniform, poreless texture using powder and oil-absorbing primers.
- Best for: Oily or combination skin. It keeps shine at bay and stays in place much longer under hot/humid weather conditions.
- Avoid if: You have extremely dry skin, as matte foundations can cling to dry patches and make the skin look flat or dull.
